DepEd's 236K Trees: A Christmas Gift for the Children
In a remarkable move toward environmental sustainability, the Department of Education (DepEd) has officially kicked off its large-scale project, “DepEd’s 236,000 Trees – A Christmas Gift for the Children.” This groundbreaking initiative aims to not only contribute significantly to the nation’s reforestation efforts but also to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in Filipino children. The project, set to plant over 236,000 trees across various regions, involves the active participation of DepEd’s vast network of 47,678 public schools. The nationwide initiative is envisioned as a gift from the Department to the children, ensuring a cleaner, greener environment for the current generation and those to come.
One of the distinctive features of the project is its focus on integrating environmental education into the curriculum. Students from participating schools will have the unique opportunity to engage in hands-on tree-planting activities, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental issues and promoting conservation efforts. The initiative aligns with DepEd’s broader mission to mold socially responsible citizens who are environmentally conscious. By actively involving students in tree-planting activities, the project seeks to instill a strong sense of responsibility toward the environment from an early age.
“Tangos National High School stands firmly behind this commendable initiative,” Mrs. Judith D. Gutierrez, Assistant Principal II, said during the official launch event. Attended by head teachers, master teachers, regular faculty, and enthusiastic student leaders, the event took place at the Gulayan sa Paaralan area on December 6, 2023, starting at 8:00 am. The collaboration between DepEd and Tangos National High School emphasizes the importance of collective efforts in fostering environmental stewardship. The project not only provides tangible benefits in terms of increased green cover but also sets the stage for long-term environmental consciousness among the youth.
As the tree-planting initiative gains momentum, it is anticipated to serve as a model for future programs that blend education with practical environmental action. DepEd’s commitment to nurturing a generation of environmentally responsible citizens marks a significant stride toward a sustainable and ecologically aware future for the Philippines.
